COP26

COP26 Statement

In a few days’ time political leaders from around the world will come together in Glasgow for critical climate crisis talks.  After many years of promises and targets it is now imperative that their actions must speak louder than their words.

The future existence of all life on our planet depends on the talks that will take place in the coming days, and we must protect our environment.  We ask on behalf of our community that political leaders commit to actions that will restore the balance we must have with nature so that we and future generations can all continue to live their lives in a healthy and sustainable environment.

We urgently need our world leaders to commit to the phasing out of fossil fuel extraction, the ceasing of de-forestation, the restoration of land and cleaning up of our polluted oceans.  We must all make positive changes in order to transition to a zero-carbon world for our continued existence.  There are no borders when it comes to climate change.  It's a global issue.

Britain was at the heart of the first industrial revolution and Cornwall played a significant part via its mining and associated industries in creating the world we live in today.  Now we must lead the way again by moving away from polluting industries and encourage and support other countries to do the same so that we are all beneficiaries in the long term.

These changes are essential.  We must see this as a huge opportunity to create employment opportunities for a new generation in clean, environmentally aware and sustainable industries such as renewable energy, electric vehicles and net-zero housing.

Here in Carharrack we have declared a climate emergency, we have an active climate action group, we support the education of our children in creating and working towards a “greener” world.  We support an allotment site with a focus on sharing good practice, reducing our water consumption, recycling, and providing habitats for our wildlife.  We have a village hall committee that are making efforts to implement changes to the building to make it carbon neutral.   We have banners at both entrances to our village with “green” messages for all that pass through to read.

We are all committed to reaching net-zero by 2030.  Now we need our leaders from our local MP – George Eustice to our Prime Minister Boris Johnson to show true leadership at this pivotal time.  A time of commitment and action.
